Limerick-Offaly tie confirmed for Gaelic Grounds

Limerick’s All-Ireland hurling qualifier against Offaly on Saturday evening will definitely take place at the Gaelic Grounds.

Kilmallock had been put on stand-by amid fears that the pitch at the Ennis Road venue would be unable to cope with three major fixtures in less than 24 hours this weekend if the wet weather of recent weeks had continued. The All-Ireland qualifier is fixed for 7pm on Saturday, while the Gaelic Grounds will also stage the Munster minor and senior finals on Sunday afternoon.

But with an improvement in the weather since last weekend, the Limerick county board has expressed confidence that the pitch won’t cut up and will be in perfect condition for Sunday’s glamour showdown between Clare and Tipperary which is heading for a 45,000 sell-out.

Meanwhile, the GAA has explained that the reason why Laois hurlers weren’t granted a 24-hour postponement of their Liam McCarthy Cup relegation play-off against Antrim on Saturday week was because there are important club games taking place in Antrim the following day, and they would not have been a position to change them to another date.

With the Laois footballers also in All-Ireland qualifier action against Longford on the Saturday, new hurling boss Niall Rigney has been deprived of the services of dual players Cahir Healy, Darren Rooney and Johnny O’Loughlin.
