Pope John Paul II in Clonmacnoise - 1979

Postby Bord na Mona man » Fri Apr 22, 2005 6:30 pm

I was reading the other day about the (then) Pope's visit to Ireland in 1979.
The reason the Pope demanded he be brought to Offaly, was because missionaries from Clonmacnoise brought Christianity to Poland.
There you go, our 2 millennia of educational and spiritual enlightenment didn't go unnoticed.

It's a terrible shame we've never had an Offaly Pope.
Cardinal Biffi of Bologna was the closest to an Offaly candidate at the recent conclave.
He did claim that the Antichrist "espoused vegetarianism, pacifism, environmentalism and animal rights".
Which is the kind of no-nonsense approach that commands respect.
