No Cure for the Summertime Blues?
Summertime again, and Offaly hurlers prepare to face Kilkenny in the Leinster hurling championship, filling the county with dread, evoking bad memories of some deep scrapes from feline claws. For the rest of their lives Offaly folk will recall black Sunday 12th June 2005 and the massacre doled out b...

Re: Sunshine supporters
A fella landed in the seat beside me five minutes before the start and announced he was from Edenderry. He didn’t have a programme, he had one of the referendum canvas cards with both starting XV’s listed. Anyways, three quarter ways through he asked me who was number 15. “Dolan” sez I, presuming he...

Re: Horseleap Question
Yes, there is a parish rule in Offaly where you have to play with the parish where you live or work. You can’t pick and choose though and in the case of a schoolgoing child, the location of the school cannot be substituted for the place of work. Isn’t there a case in Newbridge going through the cour...

Re: Big Game Prediction
Ah shure there's always a risk you'll lose the match, don't let that worry ya! i wouldn't necessarily agree it's an inexperinced Offaly team, most have been there at least a few years now. Also, I don't think Offaly are so inferior to Westmeath that we need the opposition to sleepwalk through the ma...

Ref watch
I see Jimmy McKee from Armagh is the appointed referee. Does anyone know anything about him?
I presume he will be more tolerant of the Ulster style 'tackling' which mightn't suit the home team.

Some O'Connor Park history for ye
Saturday will be Offaly’s 24th championship match at O’Connor Park and the first since the qualifier against London in 2003. Of the previous 23, Offaly have won 11, drew 5 and lost 7. Four of those defeats came at the hands of Laois who beat Offaly four times at OCP (1946, ’59, ‘68 & 2003). Othe...

Some thoughts on crowded midfields
Some interesting points by the lads on the ‘challenge match’ topic on making space. Some points I would like to add, though I would bow to the superior technical knowledge of the football regulars here. Offaly have an advantage in that they know exactly how Westmeath will play the game, by crowding ...

Offaly U21 3-16 Carlow U21 1-8
A good evening’s work for the Offaly under 21 hurlers in Carlow yesterday evening. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any Offaly team so dominant under the dropping ball, ever. Whether that’s a trait of those born in 1987 or Carlow were poor in this area remains to be seen. Actually Carlow reminded me of ...

Re: U21 v Carlow
Be that as it may, if their attitude isn't right they won't beat Carlow on Wednesday!Obviously I hope they do win but Murphy's law being what it is, the one year they would have home draws in the semi final & final, with Kilkenny & Dublin on the opposite side of the draw, is the year they'll...

Some initial thoughts
Ger Healion has the full back’s tendency to stay behind his man. He’s good in the air though and he’ll give Noel Hickey loads of it in three weeks time. I wasn’t that happy with Brian Carroll and I thought it was a lazy option to award him MOTM. He comes infield too much, taking up station between t...

Some random thoughts on Laois v Offaly
To assume Offaly will always beat Laois is a dangerous assumption. The trend can’t go on ad infinitum and some year Laois will beat Offaly in championship hurling. This is Laois’s biggest ‘derby’ match and the only one they stand a realistic chance of winning. The league defeat should still act as a...

Offaly vs Laois on Sunday
Seeing as the match programme for the corresponding fixture two years ago listed James Hooban wearing no. 29 for Laois, Offaly and Dublin I'll choose to ignore the line-ups in next Sunday's publication, if you don't mind. Welcome to UF.com, by the way! Well lads ye can believe what ye want to ...

What's in a name?
Plain of the Herbs is Sassenach for Lusmá. Actually, now you've got me curious LS. Where does your user name come from? And to the rest of yee, I've seen similar threads on other forums, so where and what are the origins of your user names? Off the top of my head, BNMM, POTH, Muck Savage, Rat, Arbar...
