Some thoughts on Offaly vs Waterford

Sunday was spent wishing the day away waiting for the fourth round qualifier draw. Waterford or Galway? Opinion locally was divided, pretty much depending on peoples’ opinions of the enigma that is Galway senior hurlers. Galway’s running or Waterford’s brute force? Tribesmen or Deise? Loughnane or F...

Nothing comes before Laois in that establishment.

Coincidentally, will Midlands Radio 3 be airring the Offaly Down game or the Laois Longford game?

d'telly

The impression I got at the end of Sunday night's Sunday Game programme as they lised the sport on TV for the week was that both hurling qualifiers were live on Saturday. Lads, a bit worried now about TV. There was an ad there on the telly, and they had GAA Live starting at 6.40pm on Saturday, which...

Re: Offaly's best days - Ones when the supporters didn't show up

Five out of six here, I wasn’t there in 1980 but that was the match that sparked my enthusiasm for the games. Actually t’was Joachim Kelly who caused havoc for John Henderson at full forward that day in 1990. I recall goalkeeper Kevin Fennelly looking outfield, flinging the hurl on the ground and ge...

I wonder which match Google [bot] and Yahoo [bot] will go to?

Are there two of those shark yokes or just the one? :)

Re: Fixture Clash this Saturday

Television scheduling will dictate the start times given that both hurling qualifiers are live on RTE with TV3 screening the Monaghan - Derry football qualifier. The football is at 3pm so the hurling matches would be at 5pm and 7pm or thereabouts. I wonder could the Offaly - Down qualifier be brough...

Re: Super!

From memory the arrangements for the round 4 qualifiers are that the venues are to be decided by the commit-tee which is code for a double header in Thurles. See the official GAA site. I haven't much to say only hats-off to the lads. I'd like to echo the points DD made in the earlier post. Nothing m...

How I'd line them out

The team I would have liked to see picked with everyone fit and well would be as follows:- Mullins Franks, Kenny, Verney Horan, Oakley, K Brady, Ryan, Mahon Molloy, Rory H, Murphy Carroll, Bergin, Dooley Having Joseph Bergin and Rory Hanniffy back again gives extra scoring options up front. While Be...

Kilmallock?

Sure you don't have to go around the town. There's a car park on the right hand side off the main street just after the tower. The pitch is barely ten minutes away. I was at that match in 2003 too, a great performance - goals by Carroll & Murray I recall. There would be upside and downside with ...

Re: LIP SERVICE AND WEAKER COUNTIES.

Yea, but the key difference here is the scoring systems. It's far easier defend in soccer where it's goals only and an inferior team can put the shutters up. In hurling it's very difficult to defend when a superior team can score from ninety metres. I wouldn't say it's very odd at all - I'd say it's...

Re: LIP SERVICE AND WEAKER COUNTIES.

The thing is that the strong hurling counties are getting stronger because they are the ones who are working harder at their game, improving and improvising year on year. Antrim, Laois, Dublin, Down and all the others missed the revolution started by Clare in the mid-nineties. The Kilkenny revolutio...

The mad month of August 1998 . . .

Some personal recollections of the maddest month ever - August 1998, and the events leading up to it. February 1998. The previous November Birr won the Leinster Club hurling title but must face Clare champions Clarecastle in the All-Ireland semi final at Thurles. Clare hurling stands at an all-time ...

Re: Qualifier draws

I'd give our lads a chance against Limerick, in fact I'm actually looking forward to it. Limerick are no Kilkenny and if they can keep out the goals the longer they stay in the match. I don't think I'm a fantasist though!! Anyway with the two draws involving our senior teams only a pure fantasist wo...
