Re: Offaly Minor Football and Hurling 2023

I'm still a bit emotional as I sit here in the Croke Park press box, finally finished the assorted reports for tomorrow's papers, so I've decided I may as well wade in here, just to really wind myself up even more...... The two posts side-by-side below, but particularly the one from Anonymous1, stri...

Re: Offaly Senior Hurlers 2023

Carlow have had a fair degree of success against Offaly in recent years and will come to Croke Park quietly confident. It started in 2005 in the league when they beat Offaly in the league, 3-12 to 1-13. The usual shouts of 'new low' and 'rock bottom' rang out. When the sides met again in the league...

Re: Offaly Senior Hurlers 2023

I think if there was still five teams in Leinster, as was the case up to and including 2020, this would be the moment when the clamour would come out to make it six. The fact that it would be unworkable from a fixtures point of view to extend it to seven means that they won't be able to make any rea...

Re: Offaly Senior Hurlers 2023

The fact that the game is live on TV would have been a factor in the throw in time as well.

Re: Offaly Senior Football Team - Championship 2023

Lone Shark mentioned Friday night game v Laois would be great, and he's right. As a one off game for both counties it should have been considered, give Portlaoise town a boost and with lights 8pm would give ample time for most to make it. As it happens, there's not a lot up against it this week, bu...

Re: Offaly Senior Football Team - Championship 2023

I wasn't there yesterday so I'm not going to judge too much, but all I'll say is that I'm certainly not going to get unduly worried with the team not running up a big score against a poor opponent that conceded the first seven points in a row. Yeah, tuning out with 15 to play is not ideal, but there...

Re: Offaly Senior Hurlers 2023

I absolutely wouldn't look at it from the point of view of "who do we want to play in the final". If ever there was a logic that was destined to end in painful, ironic defeat, that's it. Now don't get me wrong, if we do field an understrength team in Carlow next weekend, that accusation wi...

Re: Management committee

Back in the day I applied for one of these administrator roles, and there's no doubt that a huge part of the issue is the fact that the GAA still runs on the fuel of volunteer energy, and (rightly so) there is a lot of awareness from those recruiting for these sort of positions that they don't want ...

Re: Offaly Senior Football Team - Championship 2023

I was absolutely delighted to see the celebrations, and I really hope the lads do feel like they're ten feet tall afterwards. This is the thing about sporting culture that drives me cracked these days - it always has to be about "the bigger picture", and the greater scheme of things. Some ...

Re: Offaly Senior Hurlers 2023

Given that Kildare hurling is largely centred in the north of the county, relatively close to the M4 (Naas excepted of course), you'd wonder if Mullingar would be a consideration? Offaly minors playing there earlier in the day would make it much better from an Offaly point of view too.

Re: Offaly Senior Hurlers 2023

Just seen this comment in this weeks offaly indo ‘ The absence of a significant cohort of players making an impression in the Fitzgibbon Cup is a concern’ Has anyone an idea of what players we have making an impression in the fitzgibbon cup? Sorry, just to come back on this - the point was that we ...

Re: NFL Div 3 predictions 2023

As it happens, I was in Ederney for Fermanagh's win over Longford. Very simple football, but well executed by Fermanagh. Daragh McGurn was very involved from centre forward, and Che Cullen completely shut down David McGivney, who was the lynchpin of the Longford attack in the O'Byrne Cup final. Offa...

Re: Offaly Minor Football and Hurling 2023

The fact that St. Kieran's just won their semi-final convincingly would suggest to me that the final will be a very high quality, competitive affair, and that might save the concept of Offaly Schools for another while, particularly if it is explained that this is an anomaly of a year (which it is). ...

Re: Offaly Senior Football Team - Championship 2023

Yes, we're missing players next year - but it's easy to look at Offaly and say that we'll miss John Moloney, and we'll miss Jordan Hayes, and Eoghan Rigney, and possibly a few more too, including (it seems) the most talented footballer the county has known for a generation. But that's the reality of...
