Re: Offaly v Westmeath, Mullingar, Sunday 1st May

I was in Mullinger yesterday and it was hard to watch. I stayed to the bitter end even though I wanted to go 10 minutes into the second half. The hurling gods tricked us for 20 years by allowing us into the big boys club and slowly but surely over the last 15 years they have reaped their revenge in ...

Re: Offaly v Westmeath, Mullingar, Sunday 1st May

Thanks POTH for the twitter heads up. I see that quite a number of players (more than I would have expected) who played in 1976 or were in the subs went on to win All Ireland medals. Incredible to see that in 1965 we played Carlow in the first round of the championship on 25 April but the Leinster f...

Re: Offaly v Westmeath, Mullingar, Sunday 1st May

Thanks to wiki (and not my memory ) I see that in 1976 Westmeath beat us as Townsman said in Croke Park. Score was 1-14 to 1-11. Westmeath went on to lose to Kilkenny who in turn were hammered by Wexford in the Leinster final. A P.Delaney scored 5 pts. Was that Pat from Kinnity ? Also Pat Carroll go...

Re: Offaly's celebration of 1916's golden jubilee

I see that Johnny Culloty the great football goalkeeper played in goals for the hurlers as well. I didn't realise he played hurling.

According to wiki he won 4 division 2 league medals in hurling.

He was manger of Kerry footballers in 1972 when we beat them in AI final.

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

Disappointing but not a complete disaster. As mentioned previously in this thread we probably would have struggled in division 2 next year. So we lose one friendly neighbour in division 3 in Westmeath and are joined by another in Laois along with Armagh. All in all it was a good league where we won ...

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

I think consolidating our position in division 3 should be our goal. Yo-yoing from division 4 to 3 and back to 4 is doing us no good and saps morale. It would be great to get the monkey off our backs and get a championship win. The loss in Tullamore last year after beating Longford in the Division 4...

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

Jimbob or indeed anyone - would you be of the view that perhaps division 2 would be a step too far for this team at the moment, or should we be looking to play the best teams in order to improve ?

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

We must beat Limerick on 3 April and hope other results go our way to have a shout of going up. Otherwise we could still be relegated if results go against us, I think. I agree that division 2 football might be a step too far for us.We have been very competitive in all our games which shows we are c...

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

I agree about the gulf in class between divisions 2 and 3.

Meath, Laois and Armagh are all struggling and two of those could be relegated. Shows how poor Leinster football is. Next season there might be only two teams from Leinster in top two divisions ( Dublin and Kildare ).

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

Big win for Kildare today - Kildare 2-13 Tipperary 1-05 Not good for Tipp's scoring average which has now gone from +2 to -9. Could be important if we finish level with them in a 3 way tie. On a straight head to head they have the advantage of course having beaten us earlier. We still need to win ou...

Re: Allianz Hurling League Roinn 1B 2016

It was my first opportunity to see the hurlers this year and it was undoubtedly a terrible let down. I was looking to see some signs of progression and it was terribly disappointing to see us being out fought and out thought in the second half.Kerry smelled victory and fought tooth and nail to get t...

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

First Touch - head to head kicks in if 2 teams finish on same points. Scoring difference kicks in if more than 2 teams finish level on points. This has been confirmed across in the hurling thread where thankfully things seemed to have moved on from the Tullamore/Birr nonsense ! On the football front...

Re: 2016 National League Div 3

Are we certain to be in division 3 next year after today's win ??

I suppose we should think more positively and look to promotion by winning last two games. It's a very tight division.

Re: Allianz Hurling League Roinn 1B 2016

Fantastic win today. Great score put up too.

Nicely set up now for Kerry game in Birr.

At least this result settles the Tullamore/Birr debate. Play all home games in Wexford Park I think !!!!
