Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
Little bit of a tangent, but it's an interesting phrasing - only those who play in finals shall be graded up. So if someone from Kilcormac-Killoughey played every minute of the senior B championship so far, but missed the final, they would stay as a "Senior B" player, while the guy who cam...

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
I could be wrong, but I've a vague recollection of when Rhode and Tullamore won intermediate football titles with their second team (2004 for Tullamore, was it 2010 for Rhode? Not sure....), that when that happens, all those footballers immediately got regraded as "senior" so the club had ...

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
Is that a thing, that we alternate between chairpersons from football and hurling clubs? Never noticed it if so. To be honest, the majority of chairs have probably had a dual background. Certainly in recent years, you couldn't say that Pádraig Boland, Tommy Byrne or Michael Duignan would have had an...

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
I’m probably over thinking this but could Ferbane’s win yesterday vs Rhode and possible championship success expedite the decline of Belmont hurling? Players might view football success as far more attainable in the short to medium term and decide to focus much more on that than hurling. I’m not pr...

Re: Election 2020 laois offaly
From this morning's electoral commission report: The Commission recommends that the constituency of Offaly should align with the Co. Offaly boundary. While some of the submissions called for the retention of the breach of county boundaries in and around the town of Portarlington, the Commission cons...

Re: Offaly U20 footballers 2023
Historically, St. Michael's was always Rhode, St. Brigid's and Clonmore Harps - I can't see there being any change to that. It's a bit of a glitch, in that this age bracket is a bit of a down year for Rhode, while a full strength Tullamore team at this age is incredibly strong - you have three or fo...

Re: Offaly Senior A Hurling Championship 2023
I think the standard of offaly club hurling has dropped dramatically and continues to drop every year. Some of these senior A teams wouldn't keep it pucked out to the Rynaghs ,Birr , clareen or coolderry County championship teams of years gone by. Obviously in the mid 1990s, Offaly had as much tale...

Re: Best hurling pitch in the county
I assumed it had gone that way all right - I haven't been there in 15 years or so, so I was guessing it had been let decline a bit. Or possibly my memory was flawed!

Re: Best hurling pitch in the county
Haven't been there this year and I might be biased since my last few visits were on gorgeous summer days, but Coolderry would edge it for me. As an aside, I've a vague recollection of Mountbolus being a great pitch back when it was used for games. I presume with the amount of teams K-K field these d...

Tempted to lock this thread because of repeated instances of West Offaly erasure.

Re: Offaly Senior Football Team - Championship 2023
This debate is bizarre. Here's the team from the final against Roscommon two years ago. OFFALY: Sean O'Toole; Lee Pearson, Tom Hyland, Aaron Brazil; Fionn Dempsey, John Furlong, Rory Egan; Ed Cullen, Morgan Tynan; Cathal Flynn, Cathal Donoghue, Oisin Keenan Martin; Cormac Egan, Jack Bryant, Aaron Ke...

Re: Offaly Senior Football Team - Championship 2023
I am absolutely, emphatically, not saying that there is no value to the Tailteann Cup. Westmeath clearly took a lot from winning it last year, albeit that hasn't manifested itself on the field of play so far in 2023. I would say that it's very early to tell. Maybe the competition will take off. Mayb...

Re: Offaly Senior Football Team - Championship 2023
I'm still here in OCP and it's a strange paradox - I've never seen an Offaly performance that was so lethargic, and yet been so sympathetic to the players afterwards. Simply put, these lads just ran through too many big emotional and physical hurdles all year, and trying to get up for the Tailteann ...

Re: U20 hurlers 23
I don't know if I'm feeling what other Offaly people are feeling, or if it's just me, but there are serious mixed emotions going on right now with regard to Sunday. I do feel very angry at Cork's tactics, but not because I think it swung the result. If they were down a man, they still would have bee...
