Re: Lets start playing the club championships again
I think it'd be no harm to have club football championship group games on the same weekend as Offaly senior hurlers are out and vice versa for club hurling / county football. After all the likes of Tullamore footballers should be able to qualify for the knockout stages without Shane Dooley. If they ...

Re: Lets start playing the club championships again
[quote="Plain of the Herbs"]The format of the Cork Senior championship is, of course, important if you are using it for comparative purposes. For your information, both Cork Senior championships are run on a straight knockout basis with a back door for first round losers only. It can be pl...

Re: Hurling Qualifier Draw
I suspected that Galway were poor in the air, purely because we nearly beat them twice last year in the championship. Westmeath are going the right way developing hurlers who can win possession. I noticed these managerial quotes myself and it is fascinating to see a Galway man targeting this Galway ...

Re: A new Pioneer for Offaly Hurling
I couldn't agree more with what you are saying there Durra1. Great Post! Would it be too much to hope that the present management team (or maybe their successors) have these ideas brought to their attention and act on them.

Re: offaly hurlers (great effort)
I agree with the Kilkenny observations by and large. Also I agree that in retrospect Offaly should have gone the long range point route with Bergin sited at centre half forward (ref great posts from Great Day for the Parish). Maybe they have found a new Offaly style in the last few minutes of the ga...

Re: Offaly Team to face Wexford in Leinster Football Championshi
The nearest comparison to Anton Sullivan I've seen in an Offaly shirt is Johnny (Sean) Cooney of the 71/72 team who was a similar type of tearaway wing forward. Johnny might have been a tad more direct in that he'd go through a brick wall on the way to goal but then he probably didn't have to track ...

Re: Offaly Team to face Wexford in Leinster Football Championshi
The worst moment for me was when Anton Sullivan went down. I don't know if I've ever seen an Offaly player with that mix of pace and football nous/combativeness/competitiveness. I hope that he doesn't get worn down suffering from recurring injuries. It's easy to say about a player like him that he's...

Re: Lets start playing the club championships again
I agree with Puzzled. Next year the Master Fixture List should have club games all through the summer and if, as seems likely, we have new football and hurling senior managers they should be told straight up that they can't interfere with the club games. Actually I'm more interested in the county te...

Re: The bigger picture (Hurling and football)
Offaly don't seem to have any tactical variation or reaction to opponents moves. Maybe they are well versed in tactical changes and I'm just too thick to see it. Some questions? Playing against the McGeeney Kildare blueprint of two man half-forward and full-forward lines with ball angled to the corn...

Re: Offaly v Westmeath MHC Q/F
On the credit side Alan Kelly of Lusmagh got through a lot of good work around midfield, especially in the 2nd half. Not much else good to report! I believe Cillian Kiely (K/K) and Sean Gardner (Lusmagh) are very young so they may well come to the fore next year and beyond. Some of the other backs w...

Offaly vs Kildare MFC O'Connor Park Saturday May 14th 7 PM
I'm looking forward to this Saturday night special in O'Connor Park! Beating Kildare in this Quarter Final in Tullamore would be a highlight for me! I know that Kildare have a tall reputation but Offaly won't lack for preparation. There's a good interview with the Captain Philip Foy (Clonmore Harps)...

Re: Offaly vs Westmeath NFL 10/04/2011
Promotion from Division 3 should be do-able next year with Sligo and Antrim, Longford and Roscommon joining us. Some tasty games there (I'm sure the Bare Biffo would agree). I think that's still our level, as yesterday proved. It was only the Offaly spirit plus an out-of-this-world display from Nial...

Cats claws leaving a deep scar
By Cian Murphy Saturday February 12 2011 OFFALY hurling has lost its way and needs to go back to its traditional skills and make coaching fun for kids again. That's the view of Offaly legend Brian Whelahan, who believes the focus on underage coaching is wrong and says it's time for hurling in the Fa...
